The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations is doing its part in encouraging healthy habits in the school feeding programme.

The FAO contracted the services of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to undertake a 'Train the Trainers' workshop on food safety for School Feeding in Trinidad and Tobago. The virtual sessions started on April 4 and will continue twice weekly, covering 10 modules in eight sessions.

The programme intends to meet some components of the Trinidad and Tobago Standard, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) – Fresh Produce Requirements. It will focus on the critical requirements for producing, harvesting, handling, and delivering safe and quality fresh produce to National School Feeding Programme (SFP) caterers. Topics will cover the health and hygiene of workers, water and soil safety requirements, plant protection products, postharvest handling and sanitation, farm record keeping, climate-smart practices, and adult learning.

Thirty people were chosen to participate in the training, which focuses on the health, safety, and wellbeing of children in Trinidad and Tobago through the SFP. The Officials are interested in increasing the volume of fresh produce purchased from farmers but have identified many areas of concern that need to be addressed to ensure safe and quality food.

FAO and CARICOM with funding from the Government of Mexico working through the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) are working together to support the SFP. The initiative includes among its main components, facilitating the conditions for the promotion of food purchases from small local farmers and their organisations for the preparation of school meals.

The other key partners in this training initiative are the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries (MALF), National School Dietary Services Limited (NSDSL), and the Tobago House of Assembly - Division of Education, Research and Technology, Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development; and Tobago Agribusiness Development Company (TADCO).

The workshop follows last month's high-level courtesy meeting with the funding partners of the project, Mexico-CARICOM-FAO Initiative "Cooperation for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in the Caribbean". AMEXCID officials conducted several site visits – including visits to the Las Lomas Government Primary School, Marriatt Caterers Limited, and the National Aquaponics Demonstration Centre – where they met with stakeholders throughout the SFP, including farmers, dietitians, cooks, teachers and students.
